Sutyo has received the A' Design Award & Competition 2026 in the Industrial Design category, recognized for its electrochromic optical system — the engineering underneath every pair of Sutyo glasses that lets a single slide of the finger shift a lens through light and color. It's the latest point of outside recognition for a brand built on a fairly narrow bet: that the best wearable technology is the kind you stop noticing.
A jury built for scale
A' Design Award & Competition was established to build global appreciation for good design and to push design practice forward across industries — not just to hand out trophies. Every submission is reviewed by a Grand Jury Panel of more than 300 professionals, academics, and industry experts, spanning disciplines from architecture to industrial design to communication design. Winning here means passing review from people who spend their careers evaluating whether an object's engineering actually earns its form — a relevant bar for a product whose entire premise rests on making complex technology disappear into a familiar shape.
The system behind the recognition
What the jury evaluated wasn't a concept sketch — it was Sutyo's working electrochromic lens system, built into a classic Wellington frame with no visible trace of the electronics inside. The system runs on two functions: LightShift, which adjusts lens tint continuously as light conditions change, and ColorShift, which shifts the lens between clear, blue, purple, and red. Both are controlled the same way — a slide along the temple, a double-tap to reset — with no app, no pairing, and no interface to learn.
That's the part of the design that tends to register with an industrial design jury specifically: not the aesthetic outcome alone, but the engineering discipline it took to get there. Concealing electronics inside a frame this slim, while keeping the mechanism durable and the gesture reliable, is a harder problem than adding a visible feature would have been. Sutyo's team built for the harder version on purpose.
Consistent with the frame, not separate from it
None of this exists apart from the rest of the product. Every Sutyo frame carries the same baseline regardless of collection: UV400 protection, IPX4 splash resistance, a slide mechanism rated for extended daily use, and construction from bio-acetate and bio-based nylon. The award recognizes the optical system specifically, but that system was never designed in isolation — it's one piece of a frame built, materials and mechanism together, to hold up as an everyday object rather than a device you have to baby.
What it adds up to
Sutyo didn't set out to collect design awards. It set out to answer a specific question: can a piece of wearable technology be engineered well enough that it never has to look like technology at all?
